General outline

The role of Trainee Accountant at Stewart, Tracy & Mylon is an undergraduate position and will allow the staff member to develop both technical and operational skills while they complete their university qualifications.  After completion of their university studies and over time they will develop skills to enable them to perform the role of Graduate Accountant.


The trainee role is focussed on productive learning. The firm will give you the support you need to learn and grow, enabling you to work on increasingly higher levels and volume of work, with greater levels of independence. This is a role where you need to be willing to learn and complete assignments as prescribed.  Trainees work closely with their reporting manager and other team members to achieve results. This role is a transitional role for learning purposes and trainees ideally will be able to perform at the level of Graduate Accountant (with experience) within 24-48 months to enable transition. 


Key functions and duties


The following key functions and duties are at the core of a Trainee Accountant’s role at STM. We expect dedication with a results-orientated approach.


Key tasks

  • Develop professional working relationships with team members
  • Ability to work in groups and teams
  • Adhere and respect firm values and culture
  • Meet deadlines
  • Maintain confidentiality of client information
  • Develop technical skills through on the job training
  • Assist in compilation of client’s source documents for processing
  • Completion of client income tax returns (with supervision)
  • Preparation of draft financial statements
  • Prepare business and income activity statements
  • Develop an understanding of basic tax principles


In completing the preceding tasks, it is expected that the Trainee Accountant will:
